I hate the Gamespy Network.

Relevant history:(Skip the history)

Somewhere between 1997 and 1998 I started "designing" webpages after Striker started making a webpage for our diablo guild, Warriors of Extreme Brutality or {WEB}. I actually used some WYSIWYG* editor that geocities had to make my pages, very simple and typical "geocities site" about starcraft and diablo. I didn't offer much as far as content.

A little later - January, 1999 to be exact - I started working on MasterMind's Final Fantasy 7 and 8 site. (don't click the porn link unless you have javascript disabled, it opens a 400kpage that makes you click ok a million times) This is the first website I made entirely in a text editor. I stopped working on that site to start on my Xenogears page. It's been ravaged by fortunecities auto-ads, and I never really got far with it.

Somewhere in there, i started visiting DiabloWorld on a regular basis and became friends with GoMMeR. We met after a "heated debate" on the diabloworld forums =) I don't remember the topic or anything, but we were both on the same side. Anyway, I find out his website address (http://www.angelfire.com/or/gow/ - The Gods of War, no longer available) and offer to do some "cool images" for the site.

As you can see, They're not that exciting. At the time, I didn't know that was the Japanese Yen character, but knowing that now makes them even more stupid =)

I joined forces with GoMMeR and Politze (now THAT's an obscure reference... I haven't seen him around for... 4 year now? he worked on the Gods of War site aswell.) to bring the world Blizzard Empire (http://www.blizzardempire.com and .net - no longer running, was going to be a site for blizzard related games, and ended up turning into a site that would host other sites for free) I don't know if Politze actually worked on the blizzard empire site or if he left before then.

Blizzard Empire soon became PC-Gamer Network, and because of our lofty ambitions, that soon became the Gamecop Network. In it's prime, Gamecop was hosting dozens of sites, and serving something like 16 million page views a month.

Hosted Sites: quakeiii.com, quake3vault.com, quake3stuff.com, pofl.org(new hosting I believe), blizzardempire.net, autokill.com, maparchive.com, warcraftii.com(looks like he sold that one to blizzard), tenthlegion.net, thebrujah.com, unrealuniverse.net, mapfinger.com, lagg.net, ffviii.net, draenor.com, diabloden.com, d2lair.com, centralpowers.com, bahamut-squad.com, and of course gamecop.com (the original code is hidden in a comment tag if you're intristed).

Gamecop eventually died out because of a drop is advertising revenue. (banner ads became worthless, and we refused to use popups for the longest time, and when we did, it just wasn't enough). GoMMeR could no longer afford to run the network and started closing down sites. (however, he left a few sites running like centralpowers.com as per my/strikers(?) requests)

Anyway, the reasons I hate the Gamespy Network:

1. They sellout like motherfuckers, try to download something from them without seeing 25 advertisements. (so help me God, I will not have a single advertisement on this site - although i may ask for donation every now and then =)
2. They pretty much monopolize the gaming sites market.(sparing a few like diabloii.net and Loaded Inc. - awesome site, I can appreciate your work/effort guys)
3. Rival network back in the day. It's a law that i have to hate them =)
4. You have to register with fileplanet to download
ANYTHING on ANY of their billion and 2 network sites. (A startling trend among sites these days - but that's another topic for another day, maby soon?)
