So 2-3 days ago I was looking online at some games and systems and deciding whether or not I wanted to buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360. I actually chose to purchase an Xbox, but after looking and calling 4 different locations around the valley, nobody had anything other than the stupid fucking arcade version of the system.
I went home, looked some more, and decided that I would be perfectly happy with a PS3, in fact I would probably enjoy it more because Final Fantasy 13 would be an exclusive for the PS3 (which is another ranting topic - why doesn't square release their shit for both systems already? most other major games do, why not final fantasy?) I happily shelled out $400 for the system, $50 for a HDMI to DVI video cable, $65 for a couple used games, and $50 for a second controller. All is well, the games are lack luster, but there are a couple games on the horizon that I'm looking forward to. (only a week or two actually)
So about 15 minutes ago I pop in my copy of Final Fantasy 12 to see how it looks with a connection to my monitor that is better than composite video. OMG, JESUS LOLLIPOP CHRIST! "This model of the PS3 system is not compatible with PlayStation2 format software." THIS MODEL! the 20gb 60gb AND 80gb models all have at least limited support for PS 1 and 2 games. WHY NOT THE 40GB MODEL?!
About 50% of my motivation for buying this system was to get rid of my PS2. who the fuck would want to have two HUGE FUCKING SYSTEMS and have to switch between them to play their games. Here's what you do Sony: you got about 30GB of space to work with here, write some fucking program to decode and play PS1 and PS2 games.
Shouldn't be that hard, you created that software just a few years back... maybe you could talk to the same person who wrote it for you, or maybe you could talk to the person who wrote the code for the OTHER PS3 SYSTEMS!
The only other let-down in gaming history that even comes close to this PS3 fiasco was parasite eve 2. You can see my opinions on that linked on the left of the page.
On to the next topic:
Who thought it would be a good idea to introduce different sets of hardware for a single console? What happened to the old days when you bought a game system, and your friend who bought the same system didn't have anything more or less than you did. Different storage capacity, different number of USB slots, different backwards compatibility, different price points, different... they all need to leave.
and finally, before someone decides to point out that the PS2 games are run by a hardware chip included in the 20 and 60gb versions of the ps3 - The 80gb version has software support for them, so it CAN be done without the emulation chip.
